On-page SEO is what Search Engines are looking for when they crawl your website.
We insert keywords that we get from keyword research into pages within Meta tags (Meta tags are hidden elements within each page, directed at search engines). To put it simply, if the keywords match in all of the tags it will suggest to Google what topic that page covers. They will now store a copy of your site on their server and index it based on the metadata you provided.
Combined with providing quality content (text/copy/articles, images, and/or video) on each page is on-gae SEO. Doing these things will ensure your pages show up in the SERP’s (Search Engine Result Pages).
Think of your keywords as the theme for the page. The theme for this page is “What is on-page SEO” I have this term on the page several times, as well as in the metadata.
Below are some on-page SEO elements.
- Meta Tags – Include keywords in these sections of your website.
- H1 tags – Main page headline. Each page should only contain one tag.

- H2 tags – Subheadings, section headings. This can be used for sub-sections of each page. Use as many as needed.
- Image alt tag – The main purpose is to let visually impaired visitors know what the image is. This description will also show up if your images don’t load. This is also what Google will use for the Image Search index so make sure you fill it out!
Use your keywords in image alt tags too.
- H1 tags – Main page headline. Each page should only contain one tag.
- Internal links Links to other pages on your site.
- External links Links to pages on other sites.
- Anchor text The clickable text in a hyperlink used for internal and external links
example: The underlined text you click to go to another page is Anchor text.
Use keywords and/or your brand name in anchor text for the best results.
There are plugins that allow us to easily populate metadata into the page, I use Yoast SEO for WordPress.
